This is old, but I just found your podcast a month or so ago... I love it, BTW! Thanks for all the analysis and work that you do! It's really interesting!
Anyway. A show I'd recommend to someone who likes FMA... My first thought was Trigun. Trigun's a little more genre-specific (it's more like a sci-fi western), but it has a lot of themes about morality and whose morality codes are superior to others, stuff like that. It's also very funny and well-written, with plenty of hugely emotional bits, like FMA. Also, like FMA and some of the others suggested, Trigun has the hints of a romantic plot, but it's not "smack you in the face with the cuteness" romantic. Plus, another bonus, it's short, only about 24 episodes, so it's a little more manageable.
